‘The keeper of the cool, cool flow’, that’s what afro-beat legend Tony Allen called her. And not without reason. Akua Naru, who aside from working with Allen, has also appeared with Angelique Kidjo, Roots drummer Questlove and Blitz the Ambassador, creates original, lyrical and socially engaged hip-hop. She mixes her low, raw, and fiery voice and poetic lyrics with contemporary jazz and soul.
As a young woman of Afro-American descent, Naru grew up with the rhythms of Lauren Hill, the poetry of Ursula Rucker, and the socially committed lyricism of Nina Simone and Curtis Mayfield. Naru has lived in America, Asia, and Europe, and has travelled through Africa and the Middle East. All these experiences and musical influences come together in her music.
